We spend a lot of time focusing on the fitness we should be doing because we know that it is good for us. We know that it will provide us with so many added benefits including a longer life, more energy, reduced stressed and feeling more focused.
In terms of your business what does this mean?
Do you take your laptop to the gym and sit it on the treadmill for twenty minutes? Hardly realistic let alone beneficial. When we talk about business fitness it means that all areas of the business are balanced and functioning as they should. Thus, this provides all the benefits that a successful business does including an above average profit margin, happy and returning customers and a high quality product and/or service.
So how can you identify the level of fitness in your business?
1. Firstly, look at the response of your customers. What feedback have you received? This is a wonderful place to start because if there a plenty of complaints or no returning customers it is a clear indication that something isn’t as it should be. Don’t panic. Sometimes no matter how good our quality assurance is on what we deliver one small step that is crucial to the result can be overlooked.
Map out the process of start to finish and see where the complaints are coming from. If you are not receiving feedback contact some customers and request for their feedback to gauge another point of view. You may find that it is something very simple.
2. The second indicator on how healthy your business is in you’re your profit line. Is your expenditure exceeding your sales? If so, have you projected a reverse further in the year? Is your projection realistic? If you don’t have a budget or sales projection in place, put one together so you can create the visibility of what is happening in conjunction to how you want it to be. Keep it simple. What you expect your target market to be committing to and over what duration. Compare this to your monthly expenses and any major expense that may be coming up. This simple outline will provide you with a good starting point at being able to identify potential unnecessary losses.
3. The third and very important place to look is internally. How are your staff performing? Has there been a lot of absenteeism? What is the culture like in your business? Staff are imperative to the success of your business and if they are not happy or productive this will impede your ability to deliver to your customers. Take time to find out what is going on and if their needs within their roles are being met. Sometimes going the extra mile for a staff member can make a world of difference and can flow through the rest of the business. Your staff and yourself are the business and only working as a team will your success be inevitable.
4. The fourth place to look is at yourself. What role do you play? How effective is this to your business? Do you sit in the background waiting for things to happen or are you out there approaching potential customers with absolute passion and commitment? As the leader in your business how you are perceived is paramount. Know who you need to be and follow through.
Like any fitness program, change things around as you need to. Flexibility plays an important part in getting the right routine that works specific to your business. Regularly check how the business is performing and whether it is as balanced as it needs to be to provide the success that you want.
